Washington DC BBQ

Taste of DC – Official Partner & Host
Sunday, October 12th, 2014 4 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD’S FIRST GLOBAL BBQ TASTING!!! Similar to Cochon 555, Heritage BBQ presented by Goose Island Beer Co. is an all-inclusive culinary feast featuring unlimited access to food, bourbon, brews, and wines in a stand-up tasting where we invite five notable chefs to create globally-influenced menus featuring whole heritage breed pigs in friendly competition. Together, we promote the family farms raising these great animals responsibly. The cause is local, the flavors are global, the talent is unbridled.

THE COMPETING CHEFS FOR THIS AMAZING EVENT include Scott Drewno of The Source by Wolfgang Puck (two time Cochon 555 Winner), Erik Bruner-Yang of Maketto (2014 Cochon 555 Winner), Joe Palma of Bourbon Steak, George Pagonis of Kapnos and Kyle Bailey of Birch & Barley. Each chef will be given a 200 pound heritage breed pig to create six dishes for a crowd of pork-loving enthusiasts. A panel of 20 respected judges will vote for Washington DC’s first “GLOBAL BBQ King.”

In addition to the whole pig competition, the event will feature a star-studded lineup of notable D.C. chefs participating in Cochon 555’s new “BBQ Traditions” series, where each chef prepares one dish from their favorite global BBQ culture. This year will kick off with Anakota Wines paired with a Lexington-style BBQ featuring a Large Black from Alec Bradford at Leaping Waters Farm prepared in collaboration with Benjamin Nola. Guests will also experience additional culinary global delights prepared by Haidar Karoum of doi moi, Ed Witt of The Partisan, Jeffrey Buben of Vidalia, Zack Mills of Wit & Wisdom, and Craig Hartman of The Barbeque Exchange. They will cook styles such as Braai from South Africa, Char Siu from China, Hibachi from Japan, or dishes from Vietnam, Spain, Brazil, and Mexico. THIS IS THE NEW Q that celebrates hundreds of grilling and smoking traditions from around the world. We are on a mission to redefine BBQ as social eating, the act of gathering around fire, making friends and eating responsibly-raised animals. Together we work around the clock to preserve timeless family traditions from all over the globe. The bottom line is to host an event that develops the conversation of local food and heritage pigs, thus creating long-term growth, jobs on farms and better food choices for the future,” explains Brady Lowe. “We are passionate about promoting food sources that support a more natural, sustainable food system.”

The all-inclusive event features 15+ chef teams cooking 1,400+ pounds of globally inspired BBQ, an amazing cast of celebrity judges, farmers and beverage producers. Guests will also experience the Goose Nest, featuring a selection of Goose Island Beer Co’s Vintage Ales and beers where guests have the chance to experience the exquisite pairing potential of beer and global BBQ. There will be a Pop-Up Butcher Shop featuring Erika Nakamura of Lindy & Grundy and Jocelyn Guest of Dickson’s Farmstand benefiting L’Academie de Cuisine with the support of Williams-Sonoma. Enjoy a special “Summer Citrus” cocktail from Four Roses Bourbon and a special wine pairing with Anakota Wines, a collection of single vineyard, single varietal, Knights Valley appellation wines from rural Sonoma County. The Welcome Reception is featuring Berkwood Farms Berkshire Pork ribs and libations including amazing punches prepared by Taste Network followed by an array of wonderful wines from Wines of Rioja, Boxwood Estate Winery, and Barboursville Vineyards. Guests will enjoy different ages of Prosciutto di Parma ranging from 14 and 30 months, sliced by a roaming Berkel and by hand off a bone-in leg“ and can stop by for a “Perfect Manhattan” Bourbon Bar featuring Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Breckenridge Bourbon, Templeton Rye, Four Roses, Glenrothes and Luxardo. Rappahannock River Oysters shucking and grilling their finest sustainable treasures, and there will be BBQ Short-Rib Bar featuring Creekstone Farms prepared by Tom Hall and Faiz Ally of Del Campo, an artisan cheese bar featuring Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese provided by the cheesemonger in addition to a portfolio tasting of Crispin Ciders – Official Cider of the US Tour. Guests will enjoy the Mezcal Bar featuring Fidencio and Mezcales de Leyenda and before awards, everyone gets the “Ice Cream Social” with James Beard Award Winner, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

The entire event supports whole animal utilization, which in turn lessens the burden on the small farmers to inventory unwanted animal parts (surplus) during any part of the competition. The food and players are hyper-local, the beverages are amazing and talk of the events reach people who care about local food made by real people. A BBQ event unlike any BBQ event you know. 100% inclusive and 1000% tasty. Follow us @HERITAGEBBQ + @COCHON555 on Twitter.
